The Impossible Shapes: A Constantly
Evolving Story of Creation
The Impossible Shapes began with three
friends in Indianapolis, IN who had been named Chris
Barth, Aaron Deer, and Peter King. They were still
quite young and not yet broken down by the "real
world," ever ready to explore their collective
imagination by recording songs on cassette machines.
These songs came out easily and spontaneously and eventually
formed into an album called "The Great Migration," which
was lovingly put together and released by Recordhead
and Mr. Whiggs during the Autumnal Equinox of 2000.
The three boys played only a few shows here and there
at various record stores, coffee shops, and basements
with their ramshackle instruments.
Chris
and Aaron then moved out of the sprawling wasteland
of Indy down into the rolling, forested hills and V-shaped
valleys of Bloomington, IN. This beautiful little town
proved to be a real utopia for them, offering a diverse
and supportive musical community as well as much spiritual
inspiration. It was truly the perfect place for them
to make their dreams come alive. Meeting drummer Mark
Rice and guitarist Jason Groth, they formed the current
line up of the Impossible Shapes in January 2001 and
began sounding more like a rock band. They played many
fun shows in Bloomington and eventually began to share
their sound with the rest of the country. Over the
next two years they released two more albums with Recordhead/Whiggs
titled "Laughter Fills Our Hollow Dome" and "Bless
the Headless." The latter album found the Shapes
heading into various "real" studios for the
first time. Also around this time they recorded a very
limited vinyl only album called "The Current." This
secret little psychadelic number has since become a
true favorite of many fans.
In 2003, the Shapes began working with
Bloomington based label Secretly Canadian and went
into the forests of Monroe County to Farm Fresh Studios,
to record their first album done completely in someone
else's studio. With the help of Jake Belser the shapes
spent the winter months recording what became "We
Like It Wild." This album was released in the
fall of 2003 and the Shapes toured most of the U.S.
in support of it, even visiting Scandanavia and a good
portion of Europe this past Spring.
The band has recently finished working
on their next major album, to be titled "Horus." It
was recorded at Queensize Studios in Indianapolis
with the help of the legendary LonPaul Ellrich. It
will be released in February of 2005.
